In an era of smartphones, tablets and wearables, one more area where its fast moving are the gadgets which supports android ecosystem. One of the latest such gadget which we came across is the "Drinkmate". This is the smallest breathalyzer in the World. This device can be primarily used by Police departments as it's very portable and handy as well.
1.8-inch long device is intended for connection to power the Micro-USB port and when used in conjunction with his companion application, the blood alcohol content (BAC) evaluation after the user breathed through its semiconductor-based sensor. DrinkMate does not require a mouthpiece; the user simply blows into the air intake, which helps keep the design compact and sanitary facilities.
We saw smartphone breathalyzers before, such as the State Alcohoot for iPhone last year. But DrinkMate is much smaller and much cheaper, following Moore's Law trajectory. It also claims to be able to deliver on the accuracy front - Which is of course a key aspect, a claim that is still to be tested since it is still a prototype - claiming BAC level measured with an accuracy +/- 0.01% BAC to 0.02% BAC. Sensor DrinkMate in maxes out at 0.20% BAC, but if you know that you're probably drunk compos mentis enough to use this gadget, let alone find my car keys.
DrinkMate Washington, based on manufacturer said the basic idea behind the device was to generate a visible, shareable BAC rating of peer pressure as a means to a much bigger group of drinkers, so they keep each other safe. This is a laudable goal, but of course is to encourage each other - another tone of voice is very important in applications. Current application design is very basic, but manufacturers say they add more features every week.
But more mainstream interest in sensors, position sensors and exercise/health focus on hardware, it can be embedded into mobile phones, more experts and/or targeted BAC Analyzer sensor hardware - such as the DrinkMate - as a complement to smart phones have anything of significance.
The bottom line: not everyone wants or needs this type of sensors embedded into their phones, but you'll see a variety of specialized gadgets hangs after their key rings are inserted, and expanded their mobile devices the utility value of people.
How does it work?
- Plug DrinkMate into your Android phone
- Follow the app's instruction to blow into DrinkMate
- BAC results displayed instantly.
Drinkmate android app
- DrinkMate sends your BAC data to your Android phone via the micro-USB port.
- After blowing, the BAC calculation takes a fraction of a second thanks to your phone's powerful processor and is immediately displayed.
Price wise DrinkMate is currently being made available from $25 to Kickstarter supporters.
The hardware is guaranteed compatible (tested) with the following Android devices:
The makers' say they are planning an iPhone version but only if their Kickstarter campaign for the Android version is successful.
