Microsoft confirmed the rumors today and announced that it has purchased Acompli and its excellent Outlook-like mobile clients for Android and iOS. Microsoft will "build on the app's success and bring it together with work currently in progress by the Outlook team."
The terms of the deal were not disclosed by the companies, but reports tell that the purchase price is more than $200 million.
Founded in 2013, Acompli offers an iPhone and Android mobile email client that streamlines many of the basic tasks around managing email so they can be completed on the device itself, rather than by using a desktop client. Users have reported that the software works particularly well with Microsoft's Exchange email servers. Microsoft offers a basic version of Outlook for iPhones, though thus far it has seemingly garnered only a lukewarm response from users.
The free Acompli app offers advanced features such as the ability to view both calendar items and email side by side on the same screen. The calendar lets users email available times for proposed meetings and send a message when they are running late.
It's not that Microsoft needed to take out a serious competitor. Acompli is a mere 18 months old with an infinitesimal fraction of Microsoft's Exchange/Outlook user base. Yes, people at hundreds of different companies across the globe use Acompli, including many at Fortune 500 companies, but Microsoft didn't buy Acompli for its customer base.
Microsoft's stated goal is to "deliver fantastic cross-platform apps that support the variety of email services" people use today to help them accomplish more and Acompli seems to fit the bill nicely. "It will expedite our work to deliver the full power of Office to mobile devices," said the software giant.
The email client will allow Microsoft to put another app on competing platforms and with its high ratings, Acompli will allow the company to jump head first into the enterprise mobile email game. It would not surprise us if Microsoft re-brands the app as Outlook Mobile or something similar to reflect the company's current email offerings.
